Self Help UK have received additional funding from Macmillan to develop our Deaf Cancer Support project. This funding enables us to: Self Help UK have 3 staff within the project; Referral Admin Coordinator, Peer Group Development Officer and Advocacy Officer. The service will cover the whole of the UK including Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland.
The funding will be for a 2 year pilot scheme.
This will allow us to support both Deaf people with cancer, as well as those caring for people with cancer.
Macmillan provided funding for Self Help UK to set up a service for Deaf people experiencing cancer, as Self Help UK have 40 years’ experience of providing support for peer support groups across Nottinghamshire and the UK. The project at Self Help UK started in 2018. Macmillan noted that there was no dedicated service for Deaf people experiencing cancer, particularly those who use British Sign Language. They asked Self Help UK to set up a service for Deaf people experiencing cancer. Niki Johnson was recruited to run the project for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Since 2020 the service has expanded to cover the UK by Zoom and remote support. Macmillan have extended our funding and this allows us to offer support to Deaf people experiencing cancer across the UK. They can use the project to help in their own personal cancer journey in British Sign Language.
